• Sold as letter sizes (XXS–XXL). If your product’s size options look different, use the tab that matches them.
• We size Ralph Lauren tops by your body chest, from RL’s own body chart, with the waist, neck and arm length it publishes as checks. This chart covers knits, jackets, vests and polos — for a woven button-up shirt, use the Shirts tab, which RL sizes on a different ladder.
• Classic, Custom Slim and Slim are all the same size — the fit only changes how trim the cut is.
• Heads up if you check a POLO’s size guide: its “Body Measurements” tab actually shows the garment’s dimensions, not yours. An XS is listed at a 38″ chest because that’s the shirt measured flat — the body it’s cut for is 31–34″. You can tell because the numbers change when you switch between Classic and Custom Slim, which a body can’t, and its centimeter view halves the chest outright. We size from RL’s body chart instead, so our numbers won’t match that tab.
• RL’s Big & Tall line is a separate set of products with its own chart: if the size menu reads 2X Big or XL Tall, use the Big & Tall tab. RLX, RL’s golf and tennis line, has its own chart too, on the RLX tab. Some styles also list an XXXL, and a few an XXXXL or XXXXXL, nearly always sold out when we checked; RL’s chart stops at XXL, so they aren’t here.

• These bands run continuously, so a chest right on a boundary (a 38″ ends S and starts M) genuinely fits two sizes and we name both.
• Big & Tall shirts, sold as 1X Big to 6X Big or M Tall to 5XL Tall, size on the Big & Tall tab.

• Sold as neck sizes (14.5–20). If your product’s size options look different, use the tab that matches them.
• Ralph Lauren sizes dress shirts by your neck — the collar is the size, and nothing else overrides it. RL publishes one neck per size (a 15.5 is cut for a 15½″ neck), which is what we show; measure to the nearest half inch and you will usually land on one.
• The chest, waist and arm length are RL’s own numbers, and they describe the body each collar is cut for rather than a range it fits. We check them: if yours sit a size away from the collar you need, we tell you, because that usually means reaching for a different cut — Classic rather than Slim, or Big & Tall — not a different collar.
• RL gives every pair of collars the same arm length (16 and 16.5 are both 35–36″), so the sleeve can narrow you to a pair but never within one. And RL’s chart skips 19 and 19.5 entirely: its ladder runs 18.5 then 20, so a 19″ neck sits in a real gap and we say so rather than pretending one of them fits.
• Polo and Purple Label dress shirts sell 14.5 to 18.5. The 20 is on only four Double RL shirts’ menus, sold out on all four when we checked; those menus also list a 14 and a 19, which RL’s chart doesn’t print, so they aren’t here.
• One typo in RL’s own centimeter view: the 15 row repeats the 15.5 row’s sleeve, 86.4–88.9cm, where 33–34″ is 83.8–86.4. We show the correct conversion.

• Sold as chest sizes (32–62). If your product’s size options look different, use the tab that matches them.
• Ralph Lauren sizes suits, sport coats and blazers by your chest: the size is the chest RL cuts it for, so a 40 fits a 40″ chest. RL sells 32 to 62, one chest per size. Land on a number and that’s your size; land between two, say at 41″, and we name both and lean to the larger.
• For 36 to 50, RL also lists the waist that goes with each jacket size (a 40 pairs with a 33″ waist, a 44 with 37″). We check yours against it, so if your waist sits a size or more away from your chest’s size, we tell you rather than leaving you to find out at the buttons.
• Jackets come in Short, Regular and Long, each 1″ (2.5cm) longer than the one before, and RL’s chart says which sizes come in which: 36 and 38 in Short and Regular, 40 and 42 in all three, 44 to 50 in Regular and Long. RL gives no heights for them, so go by the length you usually wear; your chest size stays the same.
• RL’s chart prints 36 to 50, but its product pages also sell 32, 34 and 52 to 62. The number is still the chest, and RL’s unisex chart, which some of these jackets open, puts each one inside the chest range of a letter, so they’re here. RL lists no waist for them, so your chest alone picks them; give a waist too and we name the next size toward it as the other choice. The 54, and the 56 to 62 a few jackets sell in an X-Long, were sold out on every product when we checked.
• Topcoats, peacoats, car coats and other jackets sold by chest number, in Short, Regular and Long, size here too.
• A few sport coats, most of them Double RL’s, sell by letter instead, XS to XXL. Their size chart is this one, and it prints each letter beside its chest: XS is 36, S 38, M 40, L 42, XL 44 and XXL 46. Find your number here and take its letter.

• Sold as letter sizes (1X Big to 5XL Tall). If your product’s size options look different, use the tab that matches them.
• Ralph Lauren’s Big & Tall line is its own set of products: a Big & Tall shirt, sweater or jacket sells only these sizes, so use this tab when the size menu reads 2X Big or XL Tall. Big runs 1X Big to 6X Big; Tall runs M Tall to 5XL Tall, which most size menus spell 2L Tall to 5L Tall from the 2XL up (RL’s chart prints both names).
• Chest sets the size. Where both runs cover your chest, your waist decides: Big is cut for a waist 2″ fuller at the same chest (1X Big is 42–44″, XL Tall 40–42″), and Tall for longer arms, about 2½″ more sleeve (XL Tall 37½″, 1X Big 35″). Give us your waist and we pick the run; without it we start with Big.
• RL lists one arm length per size here rather than a range (4XL Tall’s 40½–41″ and 5XL Tall’s 41½–42″ are the exceptions). M Tall and 5XL Tall are on the newer of RL’s two Big & Tall charts only; the older one starts at L Tall and stops at 4XL Tall, and the rows they share are the same.
• Big & Tall sweatpants, joggers, shorts, swim trunks, pajama pants and boxers sell in these letters too, and most of their size charts are this one, so they size here. Give your chest with your waist: a waist on its own reads only the Big run.
• One slip in RL’s centimeter view: the 3XL Tall and 4XL Tall necks print in whole centimeters (48–50cm and 51–52cm) where the rest of the table uses one decimal. We show the conversions, 48.3–49.5cm and 50.8–52.1cm.

• RLX, Ralph Lauren’s golf and tennis line, has its own size chart, RL’s Golf & Tennis chart, so RLX polos, quarter-zips, sweaters and jackets size here rather than on Tops. Chest sets the size; the waist, neck and arm length RL publishes are the checks.
• It isn’t the Tops chart under another name. An S here is cut for a 34–36″ chest (35–37″ on Tops), an L for 42–44″ and an XXL for 50–52″, and from M up the arm lengths run an inch shorter. So a 36½″ chest that reads S on Tops sits past S here, and we lean to M.
• Every RLX letter menu also offers an XS, and most an XXXL (sold out on nearly all of them when we checked), but RL’s chart runs S to XXL, so neither is here.
• RLX shorts and pants sold by waist number, 28 to 42, size on the Pants tab: a 32 is cut for a 32″ waist, and this chart’s letters agree (its M covers a 31–34″ waist).
• One slip in RL’s centimeter view: the S waist prints as 71.1–78.7cm, which is 28–31″, where the inch view says 28–30″. We show 71.1–76.2cm, the inch figure converted.

• Sold as waist × length sizes (26–58). If your product’s size options look different, use the tab that matches them.
• We size by your body waist — the measurement RL bases its numbered pants on, so a 32″ waist is a size 32. Inseam is picked from your leg length, or your height if you haven’t measured it (our estimate — RL publishes no length-by-height guide).
• RL publishes one waist per size rather than a range — a 32 is cut for a 32″ waist — so that is exactly what we show. Land on a number and you get that size outright. Land between two, say at 32½, and we name both and lean to the larger: 33, with 32 there if you want it snugger. Above 40 RL steps in twos, so the choice widens.
• RL also publishes a hip for each size up to 44, a straight 6″ over the waist, and we check yours against it. It doesn’t move the size — the tag is a waist number — but if your seat sits a size or more away we’ll say so instead of letting you find out in the fitting room.
• One thing to know if you shop in centimeters: RL’s product-page popup prints a cm waist that doesn’t match its own inch chart — it shows 107cm for a size 40, where 40″ is 101.6cm. We show the converted inch figure. RL’s inch chart, its cm hip column and its letter-size chart all agree with our numbers; only that one cm column disagrees, and it disagrees with itself too (its 37-to-38 step is bigger than its 40-to-42 step). So if the brand’s cm page looks different from ours, that is why. RL’s Big & Tall cm table has one slip as well: it prints the 44 as 116.8cm, the 46’s figure.
• Size 39 isn’t on either RL chart, but RL sells it on about thirty pants and trousers, so we include it: the ladder steps a clean inch in waist and hip at every other size, which makes a 39 a 39″ waist and a 45″ hip. Above 40 RL steps in twos — there is no 41 or 43.
• Past 44 the sizes are RL’s Big & Tall pants, 46 to 58 on the same rule (a 50 is cut for a 50″ waist). On Big & Tall styles the number carries a word, “42 Big” or “40 Tall”; size by the number. They also come in a 38″ length, the only pants that do, from a 36 waist up.
• Some Polo jeans, chinos and suit trousers also come in a 29, 31 or 33 length, which RL’s length chart doesn’t list, so we don’t pick them; the length is the inseam in inches. One pant lists a 24 and a 25 waist, and a few Big & Tall jeans a 60, all sold out when we checked and past RL’s charts, so they aren’t here.

• Ralph Lauren’s pull-on and sweat bottoms use letter sizes (XS–XXL) by waist, separate from its numbered chinos — so we size them by your body waist. RL leaves small gaps between letters; if your waist lands in one, we recommend the closest and you can size up for a looser fit.
• Big & Tall pull-ons, sold in Big and Tall letters (2X Big, XL Tall and so on), aren’t these letters: most of their size charts are RL’s Big & Tall chart, which gives each letter a waist (1X Big 42–44″, L Tall 36–38″). Use the Big & Tall tab.
• Two letter bottoms also list an XXS, a size no RL bottoms chart covers, so it isn’t here.
